When you’re searching for your high-speed internet service, the first big choice you’ll have to make is how you’d like to get it. Each option – Fiber Optic, Broadband DSL, Dial-up, Satellite, or Cable Internet – brings the internet into your home through a different method. And even though they are all considered high-speed internet connections, each one comes with its own set of benefits, pricing options and features.
Below we’ve explained all of the different types of high speed internet services. If you’d like to learn more, be sure to click on the tabs above (or the section headers below). Each one will take you to all the information on home internet service providers you could ever need.
Cable providers, like Xfinity and Time Warner Cable , provide their customers with high-speed Cable Internet services, also known as "broadband internet,". They do this in a very similar way to how they provide cable television service. Cable Internet providers actually use the very same cable that connects to your television sets to bring you Internet. And this means you don’t need a home phone line to get connected. To learn more about your cable providers, check out the Cable Internet section .
Home phone service companies – like AT&T , Verizon , and CenturyLink – are the main providers of DSL (Direct Subscriber Line) high-speed internet service. DSL uses an unused portion of the phone line to connect to the World Wide Web. And that means you can always get online – all while still chatting with family and friends on the same phone line.
Since these two systems are often interconnected, many DSL Internet providers require your home to have phone service through them for DSL Internet to work. On the other hand, some providers also offer a "free standing" DSL service all by itself. However, a phone and Internet bundle may actually save you money. To learn more of the finer details about how DSL providers do this, check out the DSL Internet section .
Fiber Optic networks – like Verizon Fios and AT&T U-verse – deliver high-speed internet connections that are incredibly fast via a new kind of wire. However, there’s a downside to Fiber Optic Internet service being the latest in Internet technology – it’s not available in all areas. But, as more and more folks get used to these blazing fast internet speeds, Fiber Optic Internet will eventually become available nearly everywhere. To learn more about this advanced technology and just how it can be so fast, check out the Fiber Optic section .
Similar to DISH TV, Satellite Internet service providers bring the Internet into your home all the way from satellites hovering above the Earth out in space. But, there is a difference between the satellite TV and Satellite Internet signals. Satellite TV providers send a one-way signal which you can only receive. Satellite Internet service, however, is a two-way signal, as you have information that needs to be both downloaded from and uploaded to the web. And if you live in a secluded area –somewhat off the grid – this option allows you the possibility of still having home internet service. To learn more about this satellite technology, check out the Satellite Internet section .
If you're looking to get online, but don't think you need the speed of broadband or DSL, Dial-up Internet is your best bet for a low-cost alternative. Dial-up is a cheap Internet option available almost everywhere there's an existing telephone connection. All you need is a local phone number and an active telephone line dedicated to internet usage. With that, popular dial-up providers such as EarthLink Internet and PeoplePC can get you connected in no time at all. To learn more, check out the Dial-up Internet section .
